Articulatory, Respectful Service Design

Prof. Norman Sheehan, a Wiradjuri man, and Dr.Tristan Schultz, a Gamilaraay man, engage in a dialogue about the role of Indigenous Knowledge as articulatory, respectful service design. Through a selection of visual patterns they contemplate how service design requires taking an ontological turn, to propose ways of being and becoming, that respects knowledge of intelligible revealing patterns in environments. This is as valid as are any minds, where patterns reveal in their own time and place through human and more-than-human designs. The speakers set the stakes for a service design in the context of plurality and systemic wicked problems to argue that designing radically new social and political patterns is going to require re-inscribing relational ways of being. This means opening up options beyond the suite of knowledge acquired under the rubric of the modernity/coloniality. They share where in their enmeshed practices, which span education, Indigenous Knowledge, futures thinking and design, this re-inscription might begin.

Professor Norm Sheehan is currently Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland. He is Co-chair of the University of Queensland (UQ) Reconciliation Action Plan Oversight Committee and a member of the UQ Education Advisory Council. He is currently developing papers on Indigenous ontology as a relational design approach with the aims of assisting Indigenous Australian communities to thrive in a continuously contested space and also to promote Indigenous Australian knowledge as a basis for non-violating environmental and social relations.
Tristan Schultz is a descendant of the Gamilaroi people along with an eclectic mix of European genealogies. He is an interdisciplinary designer, strategist and researcher with a B.Design, M. Design Futures with Honours and a PhD in Design. His work intersects foresight and futures thinking, decolonial thinking, strategic design, mapping, Indigenous Knowledge, arts and culture and sustainability. He is affiliated with multiple universities and is Founder and Co-Director of a Jellurgal (Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast) strategic design agency Relative Creative, that focuses on designing communication, strategies, experiences and events that help people think, talk and mobilise sustainable futures. He is also one of eight international comrades in the Decolonising Design Group. Tristan has spearheaded critical design-led conversations, published, led major projects and collaborated nationally and internationally.
