Student Forum Keynote. An Imperative for Systemic Transitions. Complexity – in time for change

In an ever-changing and challenging world, design has the capacity to contribute and shape how we navigate the present and our collective futures. We have witnessed how design practices have evolved in recent decades and explored opportunities to provide ever-increasing value and impact across different sectors of commerce and society. However, in light of climate change and, indeed, global pandemics, there is a timely imperative for systems-based approaches to help society transition towards embracing a more sustainable future. To achieve this, it invariably requires negotiating ever-increasing levels of complexity and uncertainty. Essentially, in such systemic contexts, every decision we make as designers, matters. This talk draws upon accumulated years of experience at the nexus of design and education to illustrate the increasing importance of systems approaches and the imperative of embracing complexity to foster timely transitions.

He draws upon many years in industry, academia and consultancy where he has extensive experience in systems, services and product design & development. Mark has a strong commitment to social change and sustainability, and chairs two non-for-profit organisations.
